Air conditioning is something many people cannot live without- literally. The elderly, small children and infants, and those with weakened immune systems cannot withstand high heat and humidity for extended periods before becoming extremely dehydrated and very sick. If any of these groups of individuals live in your home, then you definitely need to make sure your A/C works, and that it continues to work without fail. Here are three ways to extend the life of your air conditioning system.
Run It On High at Night, and Low During the Day
If you make it as cold as you possibly can at night, it will take almost all of the next day to elevate the temperature in your home. If you have your air conditioner set to cool when the temperature in your home rises above seventy-two degrees, and you cool your home to sixty or sixty-five degrees at night, it will take from the morning (when you leave for work) until the mid-afternoon (when the kids come home from school or day camp activities) for the house to warm to the higher temperature that activates the cooling system. This is much more efficient at keeping your house cool when you are home and/or trying to sleep and not forcing your A/C to work during the hottest parts of the day. In so doing, your air conditioner will last longer because it is not working quite so hard.
Turn It off Completely When You Are Not Home
If you take a road trip, go away for a week for business, or you just are not going to be home much for several days in a row, turn the A/C off entirely. An air conditioner that does not have to work when there is no reason to will last much longer. You would do the same for your furnace, so why not your air conditioner?
Maintenance and Tune-ups
You extend the life of your car through maintenance and tune-ups, and that holds true for your heating and cooling systems too. When your HVAC contractor or technician provides maintenance services for your furnace, he/she can provide maintenance for your air conditioner too. Likewise, if you are having your air conditioner maintained, your furnace can be checked and maintained at the same time. Tune-ups fix small issues with your A/C to make sure that it will continue working during the next hot cooling season.
